The Power of Support

Whether you phone call a family member, go on a weekend trip with friends, or have a movie night with your partner, support of any kind is necessary for our mental and physical well-being. Social support can be defined as a network of people that provide an individual with practical or emotional support. A strong support system creates a sense of security and belonging; it also leads to improved coping skills, making healthier choices, and increased motivation – all of which are important factors to consider for the healthy development of a child.

Children get their needs met from different groups of people in their life, including family, peers, and the school system. The level of support they receive from these areas can also influence their school performance and achievement. Ask your child about the quality of their friendships because healthy peer relationships will have a huge impact on whether they develop a positive attitude, behaviors, self-esteem, and identity. Learning about their experiences at school gives you a better understanding of their interactions and allows you to educate them on how to nurture healthy relationships.

Children who haven’t learned how to reach out for support may shut down, withdraw, or become aggressive when they’re unsure of how to properly manage their emotions. One reason children avoid talking to others about their problems is the lack of knowledge about mental health and its available resources. Another reason is the stigma that surrounds it; they may fear that people will judge them if they find out they’re struggling. Lastly, some children simply believe that they don’t need help, have a negative view on receiving help, or only want to rely on themselves.

When you notice your child engaging in unhealthy behaviors or sense that something might be wrong, take the time to sit them down and have a talk. Teach them about the importance of seeking help when they feel difficult emotions such as sadness, fear, anger, guilt, worry, or loneliness. Validate their feelings and remind them that it’s okay to experience these emotions. Asking for help takes strength and vulnerability so make sure to acknowledge any of their efforts. Your support may help them realize that life can be hard at times but it’s still worth living.
