Strong Roots

Parenting isn’t an easy thing. And if anyone says it is, they’re in denial or not doing what they ought to be doing. When we decide to bring a child in this world, it is a commitment we choose to take on for life. There are no shortcuts or time off. If you choose those, your child will pay the price.

We live in a time in which we’re exposed to advanced technology, greater opportunities and bigger distractions. Long goes the time when kids actually played outside, smelled the roses and were we all sat down around the dinner table. Times are different, and the way we look at raising and parenting our kids needs to evolve with the times.

I have been a parent for almost 23 years, with a span of 10 years from youngest to oldest. I can tell you the way I parent has changed significantly. The conversation has always been there, but I have noticed life topic discussions have started earlier and earlier. Everything is on the table: sex, drugs, friendships struggles, stress, dreams, goals, etc. For my family, these conversations have led to our strong roots.

We are here to teach our children through life. The mistakes they make give us, as parents, an opportunity to teach them through those moments.

Not talking about the tough-to-talk-about topics—such as drugs, sex, relationships and pornography addiction—doesn’t mean your child will be immune to these things. In fact, the lack of discussion may be contributing to the epidemic our youth are facing.
