How to Stay Allergy-Free

allergies

Running noses, itchy eyes, sneezing, and hives must mean spring allergies are here.

Allergies occur when the immune system marks a substance as harmful to the body. There are two types of allergic reactions: mild and severe. Some people may only experience a runny nose, but others can have a difficult time breathing or swallowing along with the swelling of other body parts.

People can be allergic to foods, bug bites or stings, medicines, chemicals, and most commonly, environmental allergens. Airborne particles that cause allergic reactions include dust, mold, animal dander, and pollen.

So what is the best way to stay allergy-free this season? Since there is no cure for allergies, avoidance is the best option- especially when it comes to food allergies. Food allergies can’t be treated with shots of medicine, so avoiding the food completely is the only safe way to prevent a reaction.

Eliminating exposure to airborne or chemical allergens is enough to prevent symptoms.

But can be difficult. There are a few ways to help people avoid environmental allergens. Since animals contribute to allergies, owners should keep them out of the bedroom and wash them often. Choose tile over carpet or decorative rugs (hard surfaces don’t collect as much dust) and clean often.

Relieve pollen allergies by keeping windows closed. Also by changing clothes after being outside, and not mowing the lawn. Pollen tends to be in the air more in the mornings and on warm, dry and windy days, so try to stay inside. Pollen is less likely to be in the air when the weather is cold and wet.

If avoidance doesn’t work, medications and nasal sprays are available to treat symptoms such as sneezing, headaches, and running noses. For severe reactions, some allergy sufferers may need a shot of epinephrine.
