The New Drug Trend: Sizzurp

Glamorized in songs and videos, and dubbed with such names as purple drank, lean, and syrup, sizzurp is gaining popularity among teenagers and young adults.

Sizzurp is a concoction of a sweet candy (such as Jolly Ranchers) mixed with a soda and dangerous amounts of prescription cough syrup with codeine. In an interview with “The Today Show” this year, Dr.Robert Glatter of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City says, “This is a very dangerous drug [and] it’s quite addictive.

The sweetness of the soda and candy combined with the drug makes people want to have this all day long. They just don’t know how much they’ve had throughout the day and by then, it’s almost too late.”Due to the codeine, the effects of sizzurp include an almost immediate high and feelings of euphoria.

Cough syrup also contains a drug called promethazine, which acts as a sedative. The combination of codeine and promethazine can make users lean over, which is one of its nickname. Codeine is a respiratory depressant and is usually used to stop intense coughing spasms. An excess of the drug can cause an individual to stop breathing.

Doctors have also reported nausea, dizziness, impaired vision, memory loss, hallucinations and seizures. Sizzurp has spiked in popularity at teenage parties, at which alcohol, marijuana and other illicit drugs may be available. When people take sizzurp in combination with other substances, the results can be lethal.
