Out of the Darkness

In an effort to bring together survivors of suicide and help raise money to continue the AFSP’s mission, the organization hosts its Out of the Darkness Walks each fall. Held in cities all across the country, money raised from these fundraising events goes towards research and educational programs aimed at preventing suicide.

Attendees can participate in a variety of walks, including the 3- to 5-mile Out of the Darkness Walk; the Campus Walk, held on college and high school campuses; and the Overnight Walk, a 16- to 18-mile walk from dusk to dawn. Most recently, the walk was held in Washington, D.C., and featured nearly 2,000 walkers and volunteers. The event raised more than $2.6 million.

“An important goal of the walk is to stress that suicide can be prevented,” says AFSP executive director Robert Gebbia. “[It] is a call to action that more can be and must be done to prevent suicide, nationally and in communities across the country.”
