MASK’s Need-to-Know Tips

Drug

Being in an unfamiliar place can be complicated and confusing. Add the effects of excessive alcohol consumption, and a relaxing vacation can quickly become a dangerous situation. Talk to your kids about being responsible on spring break before they leave to help prevent tragedies from happening. Review the risks of binge drinking and how it can impair their judgment.

Tech

With the Internet constantly at our fingertips, being distracted from work or school is easy. SelfControl (currently for Mac users only) allows users to shut out distractions painlessly by adding websites to a “blacklist” and setting an amount of time to block the user from accessing it. The blocked sites will not be accessible until the time is up, even if you restart your computer or delete the app.

Safety

As strange as it may seem, a new report found in 2015, more people died from selfie-related accidents than from shark attacks. Many of these deaths were tourists taking selfies on vacation, neglecting to pay attention to their surroundings. Cutting back on cell phone use while in transit and visiting local sights will help you travel safely and allow you to become fully immersed in the scenery.

Bully

Video games are now a common pastime, but recent studies show they increase violent behavior and aggression while reducing empathy and sensitivity towards violence. In fact, studies show that 60 percent of middle school boys and 40 percent of middle school girls who played at least one rated mature-rated game have hit or beat up someone. Because of this, child experts are recommending eliminating violent video games from your child’s life.
