Who knew 2020 would bring us so many challenges and reflections on life? We’re all living in an unprecedented global pandemic that will truly leave a lasting imprint on our society that generations to come will reflect on and hopefully learn from, as well.
There is so much fear, hate and uncertainty being projected through communities and nations, through the Internet and social media, the global highway of our times. Because of this, parenting has never been more challenging, nor more important, than now. Our children learn from us. If we are fearful, they will be fearful. If we scream or post hateful things, they will follow suit.
This isn’t about politics, who’s right or who’s wrong, who’s left or who’s right. It’s about controlling our actions, being mindful about how we treat one another, accepting differences and choosing to model integrity and respect. Isn’t that all we want that for ourselves and our children?
The theme of the issue is Actions and Accountability, and it’s based on the first lesson in our MASK E3 Institute programming. Beginning in kindergarten, we teach children that every action has a reaction and that we are responsible and accountable for everything we do. End of story. We can choose to blame our actions on others, or take responsibility and change outcomes. It has to start somewhere, it has to start changing now. Our kids are watching, they are learning and they are our future. It all starts with us.
“All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” author Robert Fulghum’s words ring true during these challenging times. Thank you, Robert, for these words…
“Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life—learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.”
