Heroin Today

The heroin going around today is not the same heroin that became popular in the 60’s. Heroin used to be considered an extreme, life-ending drug, but it is now becoming a starter drug for today’s children.

The production of heroin has increased by almost 70%, the potency of this drug has gone from 40% pure to 90% pure, and the cost has dropped 25%. Many people first become addicted to oxycontin. However, oxy or oc as oxycontin is often referred to, is the most expensive drug. Therefore, with more potent heroin available for less money, heroin has become an easily accessible drug for children and adolescents searching for a cheep high. The increased production and potency and decreased price make heroin attainable and allow the use of heroin to become normalized.

Normalized, however, in no way means safe. With the spike in potency, overdose related deaths have doubled. Even heroin addicts who have a tolerance for the drug can be shocked by the increased potency. Furthermore, it is impossible to tell if the heroin has been laced with another drug called fentanyl which is even more addicting and dangerous. It is easy for adolescents to think that trying it once will not lead to extreme consequences, but the potency of heroin today means that the first try could lead to addiction, impairment, or death.

Many choose to overlook this epidemic and believe that the heroin we are dealing with now is no worse than the heroin of the past, but the reality is, heroin kills two hundred people a week within the United States. Becoming informed about this drug and taking a stand in not an option, it is a necessity.
