The powerful and fast acting effects render the unsuspecting victim incapable of resisting sexual assaults.

Rohypnol, also known as roofies and roches, has never been legal in the US. But it is imported illegally from Europe and Mexico. Because it is a sedative it is a popular choice for sexual predators. After being mixed into alcohol or other drinks, Rohypnol needs 30 minutes to intoxicate the body. Now a dye is added to Rohypnol pills but can still be hidden in dark drinks.

GHB and Rohypnol are available in odorless, tasteless and colorless forms.

Both can produce amnesia, so individuals may not remember what happened the night before. They may only remember having a drink and nothing after that. Teach your child to attend their drinks and if they do accept a drink to watch the preparation of the drink. Having a sober friend present will reduce the risk of sexual assault.

Because date rape drugs are mixed into beverages it’s important to attend drinks. Only accept drinks from a stranger if you witnessed the preparation of the drink. Do not ingest a drink that smells or tastes strange. GHB sometimes tastes salty.

It can be difficult to determine drugging and rape.

Most don’t remember being drugged or assaulted. Feelings of being drunkenness or disorientation without memory of a period of time are indicators. If rape occurred get medical attention and call 911. Don’t urinate, bathe, brush teeth, wash hands or change clothes. All may contain evidence. Feelings of shame and guilt are associated with date rape. Calling a crisis center can start the counseling and healing process.
