5 Ways to Help Your Child Apply for College

With their high school careers coming to an end, high school seniors are beginning to think about the next step. College. While the application process may seem overwhelming and stressful, a few simple, but useful, tips can help things run more smoothly.

#1 Start Early

By starting early, students will be able to thoroughly research schools, make note of required deadlines, fill out applications, and submit all required documentation in a timely manner.

#2 Brainstorm the Essay

Colleges want to learn as much about your child as you want to learn about them. Also help your child make a list of awards, accomplishments, and community involvement. Since colleges look more than just test scores, it’s important to take advantage of this opportunity to highlight their abilities and achievements.

#3 Be Organized

Since college applications are made up of multiple parts, stay on track by creating a checklist. Make sure you have the required information on hand. Such as your child’s Social Security number, high school transcripts, and admission test scores. And most importantly, read all the instructions carefully.

#4 Revise, Revise, Revise

Have your child write multiple drafts of their essay and check the application for any spelling errors. Proofreading is essential. Additionally, being careless with a college application can result in portraying undesirable characteristics to potential colleges.

#5 Use Your Resources

Visit college career centers to learn about the school and to see if it’s a good fit for your child. Furthermore make an appointment with a financial aid counselor, who can help you and your child find scholarships and apply for funding. Talk to family members, teachers, and friends for advice and recommendations.
