Being Mindful Online

More and more jobs and college programs are going digital, so understanding how to engage with peers, professors and colleagues in an online environment is a skill needed to succeed as a young adult.

Most young people in this age group grew up with a computer at home, a smart phone that was accessible, or access to technology through school if not at home. Young adults today have been part of setting social expectations in terms of social media, online work and e-learning environments. It is still important to have discussions about social expectations in these different environments.

Being mindful of their camera presence—appearance, facial expression, and where they are when they are on camera—are good reminders. Being engaged appropriately means using the chat for the purpose intended, not replying all, monitoring content and grammar of any and all written messages that are sent out, and staying on task while in an online environment are great tips you can offer.

Additionally, their online engagement and appropriate social reputation have long-lasting and far-reaching consequences in terms of looking for a job. Digital reputations are important to employers and colleges. How we present online and maintain ourselves matters more than ever before.
