Adderall: The Addie effect

Adderall or “Addy” is a staple study drug for both high school and college students.

When prescribed Adderall  it is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Narcolepsy.  But students, who feel pressured from deadlines and time constraints, use Adderall to heighten their focus and concentration while studying. Because of this, use of the drug is most prevalent in the months preceding finals such as May and December.

Amphetamine is the active ingredient in Adderall, making it a stimulant and essentially an alternative form of speed.

Due to it’s chemical makeup as an amphetamine, Adderall can be extremely dangerous if used as a party drug. Alcohol, as a depressant, can have serious health consequences when combined with a stimulant such as Adderall, as the two rival within the body. This can result in heart issues as well as an increased chance of alcohol poisoning.

By oral ingestion Adderall affects the user in 1-2 hours.

However, the pills can be crushed and snorted to advance effects. This can cause damage to the nasal passages and sinuses as well as the heart and respiratory system. It also increases the chance of psychotic episodes and even sudden death.

Time management and study skills are essential tools for students.  The earlier they learn to manage time for school and extracurricular activities the less they’ll feel compelled to use study drugs as a way of completing assignments on time. Practicing time management techniques throughout the week preceding a test can prevent the need for drugs such as Adderall the night before.
