A Safer Tomorrow, Needs To Start With Today

Raising children today is not an easy task. Over the years I have seen the challenges change, fast forward thanks to technology and social media, and the evolving concerns as parents we have to constantly think, prepare and plan for.

I remember thinking to myself back when we started MASK in 2007 that as we prepare our children for the issues they may face, my fear was as technology was starting to enter our lives that it might become the silent killer for today’s children. And the worst part is that it might be introduced to them by us as parents and in the form of a device that they hold in the palm of their hands. How I wished what I thought was wrong,  14 years later and it couldn’t be more true and more devastating than one could imagine.

Keeping our children safe is the core of parenting, as it is a form of love, nurturing, and paternal instinct.

This issue is a very sensitive one as in one issue we will see how all of these issues that we address can collide and explode into classrooms, schools and lives.

Learning and integrating conversations and instructions on how our children can address these topics can help keep a safer tomorrow, but it needs to start today.

Human kindness, acceptance, compassion, coping skills, and the ever important phrase to teach your child that  “if you see something, say something”, encapsulate the preventative approach to tackle these issues at hand.

Technology has its downfalls as we know, but also has the potential to be used in a positive way to lift someone up, turn to for help, and possibly stop tragedy, but as parents we have to show, teach and model to our children just how to do it.

Through these pages my hope is we can bring to light the struggle through providing solutions.
