A Parent’s Role

Many parents are unaware of what to do when it comes to helping their teen through a tough time and identifying warning signs or suicide risk in their children. There are many things that parents can do to help. Sometimes all that is needed is to have someone who is willing to consciously take time out of their life and be there.

It is important to truly be available to your child. Remember to just listen and show genuine care and compassion towards them .When talking to a teen, do not be afraid to ask questions. A major factor in teen depression is the feeling of isolation and loneliness, but if a parent or adult can break the barrier and make the teen feel heard, it could mean all the difference. Often teens feel that adults try to minimize their problems. An issue that your child is going through might not seem like a big deal to you and you might know that the situation is temporary and that it will get better, but it is imperative to remember that whatever they are going through could seem hopeless to them. Take this as an opportunity to see the world through their eyes.ss

Some parents are reluctant to talk to their child about suicide because they may be putting the thought in their head. This is not true. Almost all teens are aware of suicide, so by bringing it up to your child, you will break the wall and allow the teen to feel more open to talking about suicide. It is important to never take suicidal thoughts lightly. If your child is reaching out to you and has told you that they have been having thoughts of suicide, take it seriously. One of the most common misconceptions about suicide is that saying you’re suicidal is a cry for attention. If your child confides in you, show them that you take their concerns seriously. If they’re reaching out, they want help.
