How to Parent College Kids in the Summer

Parenting college kids during the summer can be a delicate balance between giving them independence and support.

Here are some tips:

  1. Communication: Keep lines of communication open. Ask them about their plans for the summer, whether it’s internships, jobs, or just relaxation. Let them know you’re available to talk about anything they need.
  2. Set Expectations: Discuss your expectations for the summer. If you expect them to contribute financially, help out with chores, or maintain a part-time job, make sure they understand this beforehand.
  3. Encourage Independence: College is a time for growth and independence. Allow them to make their own decisions and support them in their choices, even if they differ from what you would prefer.
  4. Offer Support: While encouraging independence, make sure they know you’re there to support them if they need it. Offer advice when asked, but try not to hover or micromanage.
  5. Help with Planning: If they’re unsure about what to do during the summer, offer assistance in planning. Help them research job opportunities, internships, or volunteer work that aligns with their interests and career goals.
  6. Provide Space: Give them space to relax and recharge. College can be stressful, so allow them to unwind and enjoy their time off.
  7. Encourage Productivity: While it’s important to relax, encourage them to use their time productively. This could mean working a summer job, volunteering, or pursuing personal projects or hobbies.
  8. Stay Involved (But Not Overbearing): Stay involved in their lives without being overbearing. Attend their events, ask about their experiences, but also respect their need for independence.
  9. Financial Discussions: If you’re supporting them financially, have open discussions about budgeting and financial responsibility. Teach them about managing money and encourage them to save for their future.
  10. Enjoy Quality Time Together: Take advantage of the time you have together during the summer. Plan fun activities or outings as a family and cherish these moments before they head back to college.
