Learning the Ropes

What could feel freer than swinging through the treetops of a beautiful wooded forest? If you and your family have a taste for adventure, consider the latest trend in family outdoor activities: rope courses.

Just what exactly is a rope course? Imagine a jungle gym in the trees, made from ropes and logs. Rope courses typically include a variation of suspended bridges, swings, nets, slides, walls and even zip lines. Climbing through the obstacles is a cardio-engaging, full-body workout that tests your willpower, sharpens your communication and problem-solving skills, boosts self-confidence and, most importantly, strengthens the family unit.

If you’re a first timer, here are some reminders to help ensure your first experience will be worth remembering:

Get a good night’s sleep – Spending a day at a ropes course is a whole-body workout. Needless to say, you need mental alertness and a well-rested body to tackle the obstacles.

Dress appropriately – You want to be able to move freely and without obstruction as you make your way through the course. Avoid wearing accessories that may hinder movement or clothes with loose strings that can get entangled. Opt for sneakers or trekking sandals, and don’t forget the mosquito repellent.

Learn to lead and follow – One of the core values that a good ropes course aims to impart is teamwork and becoming an efficient leader and follower. That said, you can only reap the most of the rewards when you put your best in fulfilling both of those roles.

Know your limits – A ropes course is not about who is stronger, faster or flexible. They’re built to challenge our personal limits, asking us to push it and become better. Of course, when you feel you’ve reached that limit, know that it’s OK to say so, ask someone for help, and know when to stop.

The next time you’re looking for something fun for your family to do together, take to the outdoors for a new kind of adventure and make memories that you’ll remember forever.
