MASK’s Need-to-Know Tips

Ongoing conversation and check ins on these topics are critical to incorporate into your parenting style. Here are 4 tips to add to your dialogue and tool kit.

Safety

While hand sanitizers are promoted as effective against 99.9 percent of germs, some hazards are overlooked. According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a 2-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer contains 6 percent ethyl alcohol, which is equivalent to four shots of vodka. At this concentration, even small doses can be dangerous if ingested. Hand sanitizers also pose fire hazards, so be sure to watch your children around them.

Drug

Regularly drug testing your older children can be an important step in keeping them away from drugs. Random tests can give your kids an “out” or an excuse when being peer pressured by friends to try drugs or alcohol. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that your children will make smart decisions.

Tech

With new technology popping up all around us, it can be easy to get lost in the virtual world. Keep your family “connected” by establishing tech-free days. Leave computers and smartphones behind as you spend quality time with your family biking in the park or spending the day at a theme park. This is a great way to build memories with the people closest to you.

Bully

Teaching your children the implications of their actions can be a tool they can use in building and maintaining healthy relationships throughout their lives. If you notice your child saying something negative to a friend or sibling, sit down with them and explain how their actions affect others. Help brainstorm ideas on how to reconcile with the ones they may have hurt.
