Technology is making it easier for our kids to be secretive and is having a serious impact on drug use and youth.

Wax pens are the new craze for kids because they are easy to get, easily hidden and don’t have an odor like typical marijuana. Rather than smoke, a wax pen produces an odorless vapor that can go undetected. These factors are contributing to the increase in wax pen use and are heightening kids’ addiction and dependency on THC.

Due to age restrictions, kids can’t just walk into a dispensary and buy a cartridge from a reliable and certified store, so they are turning to illegal street markets. According to a report on NBC, CannaSafe tested multiple cartridges from both licensed dispensaries and the black market. All samples from the dispensaries were clean, but all ten samples from the black market came back positive for pesticides and other dangerous chemicals including myclobutanil, which is a fungus that chemically changes into hydrogen cyanide when lit (Ferguson, McFadden, Dong & Schapiro, 2019). These chemicals cause serious lung damage and can be fatal. Symptoms of lung damage may start out very minimal, but they will gradually get worse. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some symptoms include difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and gastrointestinal illnesses. Warn your kids about the serious implications surrounding wax pens, because it may just save their life.
