Fostering Interests and Passions Early

In today’s competitive world, no one feels—or so it seems to him or her—the pressure to be the best more than a child.

From early on, we, as parents, sign them up for everything from soccer and gymnastics, to music and dance. And while these activities teach them the values of discipline and teamwork, they can also create added pressure some children may not know how to deal with. Whether you have an elementary, junior or high school student, here is an age-appropriate guide on how to help your child navigate through the competitive waters.

When it comes to trying new things, there is no enthusiasm quite like that of an elementary school-age child. Children in this age group are curious, expressive and social. They have an innate inquisitiveness and are open to a world of possibilities. During these years, they begin to develop a sense of who they are, what they like and what they do well.

As parents, this is the perfect time to help your child discover his passions. Whether it’s sports, the arts or academics, your encouragement helps him feel safe to explore new interests and learn new skills. Your support teaches him that it’s okay not to do something perfectly the first time and to try again. It can also help him cope with any anxiety he may feel about peer pressure and being evaluated by others.

To foster new interests and passions, it’s important to develop a warm and supportive relationship with your child. Through open communication, quality time and supporting your child’s interests without imposing your own expectations, you will help your child have a positive outlook on performance and competition, a quality that will help them for years to come.
