5 Simple Tips on Preparing for Exams

preparing before exams

Final Exams can be a source of great stress, even for the most disciplined students. Between classes, activities, friends, and responsibilities at home, and on the job, the thought of carving out time to study for finals can be overwhelming. The key, however, to making it all work is by helping your child maintain a positive attitude. On-Track Tutoring, a tutoring and family support service offers these tops for final exam success.

5 Simple Tips on Preparing for Exams
  1. Prepare. Over preparation is the best strategy for test success. Avoid last-minute cramming and anxiety by preparing efficiently and effectively. Two to three weeks before finals, prepare study plans and schedules. Using a calendar, start from each test day and plan backward.
  2. Limit Distractions. Turn off music, text messages, TV and email. Distractions not only disturb the flow of study, but hinder transference from short-to long-term memory.
  3. Create/ Take Practice Exams. Create your own test questions from study guides, notes, prior tests and homework.  This solidifies knowledge of content, forces use of vocabulary, engages higher-level thinking processes and allows for ample practice opportunities.
  4. Review Before Sleep. Going to sleep immediately after studying helps transfer the information into memory.
  5. Keep Anxiety At Bay. Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing. Get a good night’s rest – cramming and “all-nighters” adversely affect focus, short-term memory and stress levels. Eat a balanced, slow digesting breakfast to provide a sustained flow of glucose to the brain. Above all, being over-prepared is the best way to avoid anxiety.
